I had my DNA tested a while back and the results were boringly predictable. Turns out I am very English with splashes of Irish, Scots, German and Swedish for a touch of je ne sais quoi.
As deep genetic history goes, it’s not the most exciting result. I wouldn’t have minded finding out a surprise Jewish, Asian or African ancestor. But it seems I will have to settle on being über English/Northern European.

The only real surprise for me was the reasonably high level of Swedish DNA in my result. As far as I know, I don’t have any recent ancestors of Swedish descent. So it’s a bit of a curve ball.

My Dad also got his DNA checked at the same time as me. Unsurprisingly, our results are similar. But he got a much higher hit of Scottish suggesting at least one grandparent of his was from way up North.
Again, this is a bit perplexing. We certainly have some ancestors who come from Scottish folk. But these north of the border folk in the tree are, as far as I can see, much further back than my great grandparents.
It’s a conundrum.
